An old KMC hike that is not often done, probably because it so long (approximately 20 km) and the destinations not so interesting,.

Drive: From Nelson, drive 15 km south on Highway 6 ant turn west up Porto Rico Road
In summer, the deactivated road requires a high clearance 4X4. Park 3 km up the road and walk left. It is two km to the cabin Huckleberry Cabin (1-2 hours) right on the trail, but when completely covered in snow, it can be easily missed.

Route/Trail: Turn south up a little-used old quad road. It is a long, gentle ascent past the Huckleberry Hut to the col between Cabin and Midday. Have lunch on Cabin Peak and return south to climb Midday Peak. The summit log is rarely signed. Return to the col and descend the quad road.

History. Built in the early 1900s to work a mining claim on Spotted Horse Creek, the cabin was restored by the Kootenay Section of the Alpine Club of Canada in 1963, with further restoration work in 1985 and 1986.
Facilities. The Huckleberry Hut is a cozy, tiny log cabin. There are two narrow bunks, each for two, top to tail.
Water from a stream that crosses the road, one hundred meters above the cabin, is sometimes available in winter.
Access year-round is via Porto Rico Road, 15 km south of Nelson off Highway 6.
In winter, park off the road.

In winter, ski up Porto Rico Road from the highway 3 km and take the junction left (3-6 hours).
