THE STRANDE FAMILY

 Strande Ancestors & Relatives

While there were a number of Strandes who preceded Grandpa Strande (Sven) as immigrants to North American from Norway, he appears to have been the first one to immigrate to Canada.  Grandpa Strande immigrated to Cooperstown, ND in about 1909 and came to Canada very shortly after that as he purchased a homestead south west of Piapot, SK in 1910.  Those preceding him to North America include: a number of uncles (Svein Strande to Tolna, ND in 1873; Ole Strande in 1873; Jon Strande to Cooperstown, ND in 1888; Thorvald Strande to Tolna, ND in 1890; Steiner Strande to Tolna, ND in 1892), an aunt (Thora Strande to Cooperstown, ND in 1886), cousins (Asbjorne Strande in 1904; Jens Strande in 1909), brothers (Even Strande to Dutton, MT in 1905; Jens Strande to Tolna, ND in 1904), and a sister (Ellen Strande in 1905).

Although the history of the Strandes in Canada is brief there is considerable information on ancestors in Norway, which goes back to the 1700s, as follows:

Svein Jonson Isum (1725 – 1805) m Anne Iversdatter Tofte

Jon Sveinson Isum (Waalen) (1753 – 1805) m Kari Torgersdatter Opsal (1769 – 1848).  Isum was changed to Waalen after he bought the Waalen Farm

Svein Jonson Waalen (1788 – 1850) m Olea Jensdatter Skikstad/Thyeggestad (1801 – 1872)

Jens Sveinson Waalen (Strande) (1821 – 1893) m Matea Oldsdatter Nustad (1828 – 1910).  Waalen was changed to Strande when he bought the Strande Farm

Olava Jensdatter Strande (1855 – 1942) m Paul Engebretsen Godlein (1850 – 1929).  They retained the name Strande rather than change it to Godlein

Sven Paulson Strande (Mar 18, 1884 – 1975); born at Priests farm near Ringebu

It is of interest to note the relative unimportance and confusion surrounding surnames. This is consistent with the changing of surnames from generation to generation, based on the father’s first name or the location where one lived. For example, the son of Paul Johnson would have the surname Paulson and the daughter would have the surname Paulsdaughter (Paulsdatter). While the Strande name, from the farm that they lived on, comes through Grandpa Strande’s mother, Olava. Historically, ancestry tends to flow primarily through the father.  Hence, the Godlein ancestry becomes of interest. About this there is the following:

Engebret Jakobsen Godlien m Kari Bardsdatter ( – 1729)

Bard Engebretsen Godlien (1729 – ) m Ronnog Gulbrandsdatter

Engebret Bardsen Godlien m Sidsel Andersdatter

In one document the surname Vole appears, i.e. the first four ancestors are listed as Svein Jonsen Isum (Vole), Jon Sveinson Vole, Svein Jonson Vole and Jens Sveinson Vole.  The surname Isum disappears and Waalen does not appear.  They are listed as the ancestors of Olava Jensdatter Strande.

John J Strande’s death announcement appeared in the November 1, 1895 (vol 13, #43) edition of the Griggs County Sentinel, Cooperstown, ND.  There was not a copy of this newspaper at the newspaper office; however, the library microfiche of the newspaper indicated that he “died on Friday of typhoid fever”, and that he came to Cooperstown in the Spring of 1888 and farmed in Nelson County.

Thora Oie’s (Strande) death announcement appeared in the April 25, 1946 (vol 46, #6) edition of the Griggs County Sentinel, Cooperstown, ND.  She died in Grand Forkes, ND, where one of her daughters lived.  A copy of the obituary was obtained from the newspaper office.

John Oie’s death announcement appeared in the September 5, 1929 (vol 30, #22) edition of the Griggs County Sentinel, Cooperstown, ND.  He died from heart disease.  He also was born in the Gudgrandsdalen area of Norway.  A copy of his obituary was obtained from the newspaper office.

Sven & Nancy Strande

Sven Paulson Strande (Mar 18, 1884 – 1975) was born at Priests farm near Ringebu, Gudbrandsdalen, Norway. He immigrated to Cooperstown, ND in about 1909 where he farmed. A number of uncles (Svein Strande to Tolna, ND in 1873; Ole Strande in 1873; Jon Strande to Cooperstown, ND in 1888; Thorvald Strande to Tolna, ND in 1890; Steiner Strande to Tolna, ND in 1892), an aunt (Thora Strande to Cooperstown, ND in 1886 m John Oie in 1887), cousins (Asbjorne Strande in 1904; Jens Strande in 1909, returned to Norway before WWI and stayed there), brothers (Even Strande to Dutton, MT in 1905; Jens Strande to Tolna, ND in 1904), and a sister (Ellen Strande m Lars Angeberg, in 1905) preceded him to the US.

It appears that he did not stay in the US for more than about a year.  When he first went to Canada he was a farmhand initially for Elija Levis and later on for Sandy McCarthy.  In 1910 he purchased 160 acres of land for $10 as a homestead (NW1/4 32-10-24 W3rd) which was south and west of Piapot, SK.  Initially he spent winters on the homestead and worked for Dad Moorhead, Andy Cumberland, Walter Peacock and the McCarthys during the summer.  Grandpa became naturalized as a Canadian on Feb 19, 1942

Grandma Strande, Nancy Devonshire (Aug 7, 1889 – Oct 3, 1968), was born in Dartford, Kent, England. At the time of her birth her parents lived at 24 Dartford Road, Dartford.  Grandma Strande first came to Canada (New Brunswick) in 1908, to where her brother Harry had immigrated earlier.  She returned to England in 1911 and then came back to Canada (Montreal) in 1913 where she worked as a nanny. Later in 1913 she went to Piapot, SK to become governess for rancher Charlie McCarthy’s children.

Grandpa and Grandma were married in 1915 in Swift Current, and the homestead became their permanent home. Over the years Grandpa and Grandma acquired more land – the Ben Bohmer quarter in 1926, then the Anton Wick quarter, and finally the Sidney Triggs farm. They lived on the original homestead where all five children were born, and where they farmed and ranched until retiring into Piapot in 1952.  In 1958 they moved to Medicine Hat, AB, where they resided until their passing. Both are buried in the Hillside Cemetery in Medicine Hat.

The closest country school to the Strande farm was Moorhead.  It was built in 1924 with twelve students attending.  When it opened that September two of the twelve students were Olga and Olaf Strande.  Nancy Strande was a trustee on the first school board.  Grandpa also served on the board in many capacities over several years and was an early member of the Piapot-Bear Creek Stock Association.

Bud lived on the farm until 1962, at which time he purchased and moved to a ranch south of Merritt, BC.  He sold the farm to Stanley Whiles who in turn sold it to Wes Purvis.

About admin

I would like to think of myself as a full time traveler. I have been retired since 2006 and in that time have traveled every winter for four to seven months. The months that I am "home", are often also spent on the road, hiking or kayaking. I hope to present a website that describes my travel along with my hiking and sea kayaking experiences.
