LORENTZ NATIONAL PARK WHS Lorentz National Park (2.35 million ha) is the largest protected area in South-East Asia and stretches for over 150 km from Irian Jaya’s central cordillera mountains in the north to the Arafura Sea in the south. It is the only protected area in the world to incorporate a continuous, intact transect from snowcap to tropical marine environment, including extensive lowland wetlands. Located at the meeting-point of two colliding continental plates, the area has a complex geology with ongoing mountain formation as well as major sculpting by glaciation. Puncak Cartenz (4884 m asl) is the highest peak in Southeast Asia. The area also contains fossil sites which provide evidence of the evolution of life on New Guinea, a high level of endemism and the highest level of biodiversity in the region.
Thirty-four vegetation types and 29 land systems have been identified within the property along with some 123 recorded mammal species, representing 80% of the total mammalian fauna of Irian Jaya. Mammals recorded include two of the world’s three monotremes; the short-beaked echidna (Tachyglossus aculeatus), and the long-beaked echidna (Zaglossus bruijinii) a New Guinea endemic. In addition it is also home to a large number of restricted range (45) and endemic (9) bird species. The property has remarkable, cultural diversity, with seven ethnic groups, maintaining their traditional lifestyles. The highland, communities include the Amungme (Damal), Dani Barat, Dani Lembah Baliem, Moni and Nduga, whereas in the lowlands there are Asmat, Kamoro and Sempan.
There are no real towns in the park. Timika has nothing touristy. Wamena in the highlands is beyond the mountains and outside the world heritage site but the only way to reach the park.
Jakarta to Jayapura 7hrs 45mins and then 35mins to Wamena on Wings Air by Lion Air or Trigana Air. Avoid Jayapura town. Wamena is small but has hotels and restaurants. Most people here are trekkers to the Baliem Valley. A permit isn’t necessary. It’s not in the core zone, and neither is Kilise, Kurulu or anything near the town. You can try to organize longer treks into the park, but it would mean multiday camping, and even then, it may not be in the core zone. Lake Hamena is in the Lorentz NP but may not be in the core zone.
Consider Wamena as a trekking trip with a glimpse of world heritage.
Baliem Valley trekking. Highland Papua is inhabited by the Dani Tribes and other sub tribes such as the Yali and Lani. They are small agrarian clans, isolated by the harsh terrain and divided by language, custom and tradition. Complex and primitive cultures that look like “the Stone Age”. The people of Papua are ethnically distinct from the rest of the Indonesian population. Most of the highland tribes practice pig husbandry and sweet potato cultivation. Walk several hours each day, passing through valleys and hillsides, with changing scenery. The hike is not difficult with porters. Best between March and September, with August having the famous Baliem Valley Festival in Wamena Day 1 Wamena. Walk to Kilise. Day 2 Kilise – Syokosimo. Day 3 Syokosimo – Hitugi – Hugem. Day 4 Back to Wamena ; Hugem – Seima – Kurima – Sogokmo

About admin

I would like to think of myself as a full time traveler. I have been retired since 2006 and in that time have traveled every winter for four to seven months. The months that I am "home", are often also spent on the road, hiking or kayaking. I hope to present a website that describes my travel along with my hiking and sea kayaking experiences.
