The English Devonshire family had many Jewish names. This piqued my interest in: Were the Devonshires Jews? My maternal grandmother was Nancy Devonshire, who immigrated to Canada in 1913. A great deal of circumstantial evidence strongly suggests they were Jews. What can’t be answered is whether they continued to practice their Judaism privately and secretly – were they crypto-Christians (marranos)?
