A DNA test in a close relative showed 8% Sephardic Jewish genes. The only possible origin of that DNA in my four grandparents would have been in the English Devonshire family. My maternal grandmother was Nancy Devonshire, who immigrated to Canada in 1913. A great deal of circumstantial evidence strongly suggests they were Jews. What can’t be answered is whether they continued to practice their Judaism privately and secretly – were they crypto-Christians (marranos)?
