TOAD MT, RED MT & COPPER MOUNTAIN

COPPER MT  2190m 7200′
These 3 minor mountains share a four-kilometre long, NE to SW trending ridge. The summit of Toad Mountain is 10 kilometres SSW of downtown Nelson. Copper Mountain and its hut are part of the Bonnington Traverse.

Drive: All access roads difficult 4WD HC
From the East: Giveout Creek Road – access Toad Mt.
From Nelson, drive south on Hwy 6, turn right on GCR, just before Cottonwood Regional Park/Lake.
0.0 Giveout Ck Rd south of Nelson.
1.7km Turn left. At 2.15km, keep right and pass a cabin at 4km. 7.2km Ignore spur
7.3km Turn right. Need high clearance vehicle from here. 10.25 Turn left
11.7km Reach Silver King Mine and turn left at old small mine building.
12.4km The top of the mine. Park. (See some old boilers below in ravine and old mine dump site) Straight ahead on the road is a Toad Mtn trail sign.
In 2011, Atco was logging in new clearcut NE of the start of the summer trail and within easy access of both Toad and Red.

From north: From Nelson drive west on Hwy 3A. Turn left before the Hwy 3A bridge onto Blewett Road
1. At Blewett, turn left (south) on  May and Jenny Road (Copper Mt FSR) up 49 Creek. 25kms on bumpy road. Road ascends towards Red Mountain.
2. Rover Creek FSR:
10km Go straight. Right goes up Snowwater Creek
14km Park (and 5400’ on Snowwater Ck
Route: Climb to NE ridge of Mt Connor then over the cirque below the north face. From ridge ski north into headwaters of Eric Ck. Climb through trees to east ridge of Copper Mt.

Toad Mt 2209m 7247′
Elevation gain: 555m (1800′)
Distance: 4km one-way
Access: Giveout Creek FSR – 4WD HC
Trail: From the top of the mine, walk on skid trail for 10 minutes, it soon turns into a trail to the right. Climb over two bumps on the ridge. The first is steep and ends at some rock outcrops. Traverse the second bump. Views improve to their best on the summit. Nelson is far below. See how many landmarks you can see.
From Toad to Red Mt ~1.5km, descend 750′ to col (6500′) and climb 650′ up Red Mt.

Red Mountain 2183m (7159′)
Retrace steps.
Traverse to Copper Mt ~3.5kms, 3 bumps on ridge

Copper Mountain 2190m (7200′)
Very popular ski destination from Nelson.

2. This area is primarily a winter ski touring area.
