OSLO TO BERGEN by TRAIN & FERRY
Trains to Bergen, Norway, primarily operate via the scenic Bergensbanen (Bergen Line), connecting Oslo to Bergen in 6.5 to 7 hours. Five daily departures, one of Europe’s most beautiful train journeys, featuring mountain landscapes and fjords. Tickets booked via the national operator, Vy, up to 115 days in advance.
The main line runs directly from Oslo Central Station (Oslo S) to Bergen Station traversing the Hardangervidda plateau.

Flåm Railway The Flåm Railway (Flåmsbana) in Norway is a renowned 20-km (12-mile) scenic rail journey between Myrdal Station and the Aurlandsfjord village of Flåm. Known for its steep, 863-meter gradient and dramatic, year-round mountain/waterfall scenery, this 1-hour ride runs several times daily, with tickets available via Vy or Norwaysbest.com. The line is a branch of the main Bergen Line, connecting high-altitude scenery with the Aurlandsfjord. Book via Vy.no or norwaysbest.com
As one of the world’s steepest standard-gauge railways, it ascends from 2 meters to 863 meters above sea level in just under an hour. Overnight Flam? Flam sits at the end of Aurlandsfjord, a branch of the vast Sognefjord.

Ferry Flåm to Gudvangen –
NAEROYFJORD CRUISE
Together with the Flåm Railway, the fjord cruise is an absolute must – narrow, with steep mountains rising up on both sides. The Nærøyfjord is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, inscribed together with Geirangerfjord further north. It is a roadless fjord, so the only way to see it all is from the water.
From Flam at the end of Aurlandsfjord to Gudvangen, it takes 2 hours. Sites along the fjord: Sagfossen waterfall, seals, eagles, porpoises and orcas, small farms and villages, Undredal, a tiny village known for its goat cheese and stave church, Aurland village, and Bakkanosi, a towering mountain that’s popular with hikers. At its narrowest point, near Gudvangen, the fjord is just 250 meters wide, and the cliffs rise over 1,000 meters high.
Operators: Book as early as possible. 520 to 595 kroner one way ($47-55).
1. The Fjords premium electric carbon fiber vessels, pricier, year-round, and the only option in the winter.
2. Lustrabaatane. Classic ferries, April to October, more affordable.
Arrive early for the best seats. Top Deck: if the weather is clear. Binoculars recommended.
Stegastein Viewpoint with panoramic views over the fjord and mountains, bus from Flåm or Aurland.
Borgund Stave Church: one of the most famous in Norway, an hour from Flåm.

I would like to think of myself as a full time traveler. I have been retired since 2006 and in that time have traveled every winter for four to seven months. The months that I am "home", are often also spent on the road, hiking or kayaking. I hope to present a website that describes my travel along with my hiking and sea kayaking experiences.
