PHILIPPINES – MINDANAO SOUTH, CENTRAL (Davao, Koronadal)
MOUNT HAMIGUITAN WILDLIFE SANCTUARY WHS
Forming a mountain ridge running north-south along the Pujada Peninsula in the south-eastern part of the Eastern Mindanao Biodiversity Corridor, it has an elevation range of 75–1,637 m above sea level responding to highly dissimilar soil and climate conditions and provides critical habitat for a range of plant and animal species. The property showcases terrestrial and aquatic habitats at different elevations, and includes threatened and endemic flora and fauna species, eight of which are found only at Mount Hamiguitan. These include critically endangered trees, plants and the iconic Philippine eagle and Philippine cockatoo.
The fragile tropical “bonsai” forest that crowns the Mount Hamiguitan Range Wildlife Sanctuary epitomizes nature’s bid to survive in adverse conditions. It is home to a total of 1,380 species with 341 Philippine endemics that include the trees Shorea polysperma, Shorea astylosa, and the orchid Paphiopedilum adductum. Its high level of endemicity is well exemplified by the proportion of its amphibian (75% endemic) and reptile (84% endemic) species.
Rent a car from the Davao airport. Visit the Philippine Eagle Sanctuary/Centre first (which is not part of the WHS. It is a good 1.5-hour drive to get there and 4 hours away from the Mount Hamiguitan Natural Heritage Museum or Visitor Centre.
Rainfall can be intense with flooding. Mount Hamiguitan Longhouse Lodge is not in the core zone. At 408 metres, it is the starting point from where permit holders start one of the 3 trails to the summit of Mount Hamiguitan.
Mount Hamiguitan Nature Heritage Museum. Around the museum area, see endemic pitcher plants, orchids, lots of ferns, some pygmy trees and plants, and butterflies. Reach the core zone after an uphill hike, but it didn’t add much to our overall short visit, except for louder bird calls and non-stop insect activity.
The uppermost are of the mountain is frequently covered in clouds of mist and fog (summit 1,628 metres), especially in the morning. The Philippine eagle takes only one mate for life and lays only one egg every two years. After getting a permit individually or by joining others on a tour, there are 3 trails to the summit, taking 11 hours of uphill hiking over 2 nights (camping) and 3 days: the shortest but hardest being the La Union – San Isidro trail, Magum – Mati trail, which offers many picturesque spots, and the average Domagooc – Governor Generoso trail. See five vegetation types: brushland, dipterocarp forest, montane forest, mossy pygmy forest, and mossy forests. Ultramafic soil (igneous rock soil highly enriched in metals and depleted in plant nutrients).
