KASLO RIVER TRAIL

Difficulty: Easy A1
Elevation gain: 66m (216′)
Distance: 3.2km
Map: Kaslo & Area Trail Map
Trailheads: Multiple 1. end of 5th street.

The Kaslo Trailblazers’ first goal when they were formed in 2005 was to establish a trail loop along the Kaslo River with two bridge crossings on the east and west ends of the trail. The trail is bordered by village history, from the unraveling hydroelectric pipes along the north trail to the devastating flood of 1894 that washed away the south end of town.

The 2.8 km Kaslo River Trail and Trailblazers Bridge opened in 2008 – 1.4 km on the south side of the river, and a wheelchair friendly trail for 1.2 km on the north side.

The Trailblazers have completed the Kaslo River Trail loop by building the second pedestrian bridge.  The new bridge is a covered wheelchair friendly pedestrian bridge with spectacular views over the Kaslo river. It provides a pleasant shortcut and alternative to the highway bridge for pedestrians entering the Village from the south side. The new bridge is to be a UNITY bridge with plaques from all over the world.
These trails were built as a labour of love with mostly local donations of money, time and materials.  Many people sponsored plaques displayed on the bridge.

Plans are to extend the south trail west toward Sandon with the long term goal of joining trails built and maintained by the Kaslo to Sandon Rails to Trails Society.  The south trail also connects to the Kaslo airport and existing trails at the True Blue Recreation Area.

The Kaslo & Area Trail Map ($2) is sectioned into 3 primary areas around Kaslo, including Village of Kaslo Area, Mount Buchanan Area, and True Blue Area. It includes over 65km of trail, the Kaslo Family Mtn Bike Park area, the Kaslo River Trail Unity Bridge and Trailblazers Bridge.

I would like to think of myself as a full time traveler. I have been retired since 2006 and in that time have traveled every winter for four to seven months. The months that I am "home", are often also spent on the road, hiking or kayaking. I hope to present a website that describes my travel along with my hiking and sea kayaking experiences.
