ROAD ACCESS – Rockies, Eastern Washington & North Idaho

ROCKIES

BIG BEND HIGHWAY: can drive to at least Sullivan Arm, about 150 km. N. of Donald Station; 2WD except for the last few kms. Drove 07/99

BUSH RIVER ROAD: take Big Bend Hwy; at causeway, do not cross Bush Arm, but go straight; BCFS campground where Valenciennes R. comes in, + or – 86 km. from Donald; keep L. at Lyell Crk. Road, about 91 km.; can drive to junction of Bush R. & Rice Brook, about 100 km. From Donald, 2WD all the way; road signs show distance from Golden, so subtract 20 km. For distance from T-C;

LYELL CREEK: logged to point 855513, so one might be able to drive this far; that’s where stream draining valley NE of Cockscomb & Ego comes in

OLD SETTLERS’ ROAD: leaves Hwy 93 E. of Sinclair Pass; 12.4 km from highway, just S. of park boundary, is turnoff for Cross River road; bridge over Kootenay R.; 4.6 km. Along Cross Rd. is a trail to the natural bridge, about 19 km. Along Settler’s Rd. is a turnoff L. & down for Horseshoe Rapids; about 45.5 km. Is junction L. with Palliser R. road; to drive to Whiteswan Lk., take this L., then take the White-Rock road R. at 3 km. Further on, 4.6 km. Further on, keep R.; at White-Elk road, keep R.; about 87 km. from Kootenay Pkwy. to White R. bridge near Whiteswan Lk.; going N. from the bridge, this road is signposted as “Fenwick Creek”

WHITESWAN LAKE ROAD: turn off #93/95 near Mud Crk., about 4 km. S. of Canal Flats; follow main haul road straight through Kootenay Bypass jct; 32 km. to White R. bridge; 33 km. to our campsite on the White R.

EASTERN WASHINGTON/NORTHERN IDAHO

SULLIVAN – SALMO MT: 106 km. from Nelson to Sullivan Lk.; take #22 up Sullivan Crk.; Pass Crk. Pass JCT. at 10 km., continue straight on #2220; pass Gypsy Meadows; at 30 km. turn L. onto #270, which takes you to the top of Salmo Mtn. in 3-4 km.; could use 4WD near end; #2220 ends at the trailhead for Snowy Top, 9 mi. Away.

PASS CREEK ROAD: turn R. 10 km. from Sullivan Lake on #22; it’s 42 km. to pass from Sullivan Lake; road becomes #302 on E. side of pass; about 20 km. Down to Granite Pass; this gives good access to the west side of Priest Lake.

PYRAMID PASS ROAD: leave Idaho #57 at Dickensheet Junction and follow #312 through Big Meadows and Squaw Valley right to pass; road becomes rougher and switches back a lot; 27 km. from jct. to pass; spur N. of pass is #306, leading to North Baldy; follow #12 down Mill Creek from pass to SH 9325 on E. bank of Pend Oreille R. (17 km.).
